Don’t just calculate it — track it
A number is a starting point. TempoLife takes your target and shows your real day against it — food logged by photo, barcode or search, plus weight, steps and fasting in one place. Free to start.
The BMR formula
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, validated as more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict formula for most modern adults:
| Sex | Equation (weight in kg, height in cm) |
|---|---|
| Men | 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age + 5 |
| Women | 10 × weight + 6.25 × height − 5 × age − 161 |
BMR is the energy your body spends at complete rest — breathing, circulating blood, maintaining temperature — and it is usually the largest single chunk of your daily burn, around 60–70%. To get the calories you actually need in a day, multiply BMR by an activity factor; the TDEE calculator does that for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is BMR?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories you would burn if you did nothing but rest for 24 hours — the energy for breathing, circulation and keeping your organs running. It is typically 60–70% of the calories you burn each day.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is calories burned at rest. TDEE is BMR plus the calories you burn moving, digesting and exercising. TDEE is always higher, and it is the number you match your food intake to.
Which formula does this use?
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which research finds more accurate for most people than the older Harris-Benedict formula. Men: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5. Women: the same, minus 161.
