Where the "ideal weight" formulas come from
The formulas on this page were built for clinical work, not aesthetics: Devine (1974) was created to dose medication by lean mass, Robinson and Miller (both 1983) are statistical refinements of it, and Hamwi (1964) was a diabetes-clinic rule of thumb. They all take the same shape — a base weight at 5 ft (152 cm) plus a per-inch increment — which is why they disagree by a few kilograms and none of them is "the truth".
The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9 kg/m²) is the more useful reference because it is a band rather than a point: any weight inside it is defensible, and where you personally thrive depends on muscle, frame and age. A muscular person can sit above every formula here and be in excellent shape — which is exactly the argument for tracking body composition and trend, not chasing a single number.
Frequently asked questions
Which ideal weight formula is best?
None is "true" — Devine (1974) was built for drug dosing, Robinson and Miller are refinements, Hamwi is a quick clinical rule. They cluster within a few kilograms. The healthy-BMI range (18.5–24.9) is the more useful guide because it is a range, not a point.
Why is my ideal weight different from what I expect?
The formulas only see height and sex. Muscle mass, frame size and age all shift what a healthy weight looks like for you. Treat the numbers as reference points, not verdicts.
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
No. "Ideal body weight" is a clinical estimating tool. A healthy weight for you is one inside (or near) the healthy BMI band where you feel strong and your bloodwork is good — that can sit above every formula on this page.
