Why sleep numbers differ between apps
Your watch says 7 h 10 m, your phone says 6 h 48 m, your diary says something else again. None of them is broken — they are answering slightly different questions. Here is what actually differs, and how to stop being confused by it.

It is definitions, not accuracy
Two apps looking at the same night disagree because they define sleep differently, not because one miscounted. The big forks are: does the number mean time asleep or time in bed? Are short awake stretches in the night subtracted or ignored? Do brief out-of-bed trips count against the total? Each choice moves the number by minutes to tens of minutes, and different ecosystems choose differently.
The main sources of the gap
- Time in bed vs time asleep. Some apps report the whole window from lights-out to getting up; others subtract the time you were awake inside it. The second number is always smaller, often by 15–30 minutes.
- Awake segments. Woke at 3 a.m. for twenty minutes? One app removes those twenty minutes, another folds them into "sleep" because you never left bed.
- Out-of-bed trips. A trip to the bathroom may be cut out entirely by one app and ignored by another.
- Which date the night belongs to. A night that starts at 23:30 and ends at 07:00 is almost always filed under the wake-up date, but not every app agrees, which makes "last night" land on different calendar days.
- Naps. A 40-minute afternoon nap may or may not be added into the day's sleep total.

So if TempoLife and Google Health agree but your watch app shows more, the watch app is very likely reporting time-in-bed or keeping the awake minutes inside the total. That is a definition difference, not an error on either side.
How to stop being confused
Three habits fix this for good:
- Compare definitions, not dashboards. Before deciding an app is "wrong", check whether it means asleep or in-bed. Once you know that, the gap usually explains itself.
- Pick one source of truth. Choose the app whose definition you trust and read your trend from that one. Watching three at once guarantees confusion.
- Expect a spread. A ±10–20 minute difference between ecosystems on the same night is normal and not worth chasing. The trend over a week is the signal; a single night's exact minute is noise.

Which sleep number is the correct one?
There is no single correct one — there is the one whose definition you want. "Time asleep" (span minus awake minus out-of-bed) is the more useful health number; "time in bed" is easier to measure but overstates rest. Pick the definition, then trust that app.
Why does my nap not show up in the nightly total?
Most apps keep naps separate from the main night so the night's figure stays comparable day to day. Whether a nap is added into a daily sleep total is an app-by-app choice; check its settings if you want naps included.
My watch and phone disagree by 20 minutes — should I worry?
No. A 10–20 minute spread on the same night between different ecosystems is normal and comes from different awake/in-bed definitions and slightly different sensors. Read your weekly trend from one source instead of comparing single nights.
