TDEE
Total Daily Energy Expenditure — the total calories your body uses in a day.
BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate — the calories your body burns at complete rest.
Macros
The three nutrients that supply calories: protein, carbohydrate and fat.
BMI
Body Mass Index — a screen relating your weight to your height.
Intermittent fasting
Limiting eating to a set time window each day.
Calorie deficit
Eating fewer calories than you burn, so the body draws on stored fat.
Deep sleep
The slow-wave stage (N3) where the body does most of its physical recovery.
REM sleep
The dreaming stage, important for memory and mood, concentrated late in the night.
HRV
Heart rate variability — the beat-to-beat variation that reflects recovery and stress.
VO2 max
The maximum oxygen your body can use during hard exercise — a top marker of aerobic fitness.
NEAT
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis — the calories you burn moving outside of workouts.
Glycemic index
A 0–100 scale of how fast a carbohydrate food raises blood sugar versus pure glucose.
Resting heart rate
Your heart rate at complete rest — usually 60–100 bpm, and lower with fitness.
Sleep debt
The running shortfall between the sleep you need and the sleep you get.
Fiber
Plant carbohydrate the body cannot digest — it aids fullness and digestion; adults need ~25–30 g a day.
