Macros
The three nutrients that supply calories: protein, carbohydrate and fat.
Macronutrients — protein, carbohydrate and fat — are the three nutrients that actually supply calories. Protein and carbohydrate give 4 calories per gram; fat gives 9.
Calories decide whether you gain or lose weight; macros decide what that weight is made of, how full you feel, and how well you perform. Enough protein in particular protects muscle during a deficit.
A calorie goal is the ceiling; a macro split (like 30% protein / 40% carbs / 30% fat) is how you fill it. Most plans succeed or fail on protein first — carbs and fat are more flexible.
