What is the fat-burning heart rate zone?
Roughly 60–70% of your maximum heart rate — a comfortable, conversational effort. It burns a higher share of fat per calorie, but total calories still decide fat loss.
The "fat-burning zone" is about 60–70% of your maximum heart rate (estimated as 220 minus your age). At that gentle, still-able-to-talk intensity, a higher proportion of the energy you burn comes from fat rather than carbohydrate — which is where the name comes from.
The catch is the word "proportion". You burn a bigger share of fat at low intensity, but you burn more total calories at higher intensity, and total calories are what actually drive fat loss over time. Neither zone is a shortcut; they are just different tools.
The practical value of Zone 2 is that it is sustainable — you can do a lot of it without wrecking yourself, it builds an aerobic base, and it is easy to recover from. Mix it with some harder efforts and, above all, keep your overall calories in check, because no heart-rate zone out-trains a surplus.
