Two spoonfuls of sauce can be 50 or 150 calories — same sauce, different amount. Most estimate errors come from portion size, not from identifying the food.

Your hand as the measure
A palm (without fingers) is roughly 80–120 grams of protein food — meat, fish, chicken. A fist is roughly a cup: rice, pasta, vegetables. A thumb is roughly a tablespoon: fats, sauces, nuts.
These are rough guides, not measurements — but they are always with you and good enough to set the portion in an estimate.
Familiar objects at home and in restaurants
Home measures: a tea glass is about 200–250 ml, a soup plate 300–350 ml, a coffee cup 150 ml. A yogurt pack and a bread slice are their own measures.
