Sleep masks
Cheap, effective, and almost always bought in the shape that presses on your eyes.
Light is one of the few sleep variables you can change tonight for very little money. A mask is not a substitute for a dark room, but it is portable, works in hotels and on trains, and helps in bedrooms with street lighting, thin curtains or a partner who reads. It also matters in summer at high latitudes, where the sun rising at four in the morning is a genuine reason people wake early.
The failure mode is nearly always fit rather than material. A flat mask presses on the eyelids, which is uncomfortable and stops you moving your eyes freely; a badly shaped nose bridge lets a wedge of light in exactly where you will notice it. Contoured masks with moulded eye cups solve both, and they are the shape most people should start with.
What matters when you choose
- A contoured shape with space in front of the eyes. Moulded eye cups keep the fabric off your eyelids, which makes side sleeping tolerable and lets you open your eyes inside the mask. This single feature explains most of the difference between a mask people keep using and one that gets pushed onto the forehead at two in the morning.
- A nose seal that actually closes. Light leaks at the nose. A soft, adjustable nose wing or a moulded contour that follows your face is what makes a mask genuinely dark rather than dim. Faces differ enough here that a mask which is perfect for someone else may leak on you.
- A flat, adjustable strap that is not a buckle at the back of your head. Wide elastic or a hook-and-loop strap spreads pressure and does not press into your skull when you lie on it. Anything with a hard plastic clip at the back will wake you when you roll over.
- Breathable fabric against the skin. Cotton, bamboo or silk next to the face is cooler than synthetic; foam-backed masks can get warm. If you sleep hot, this is the second most important property after shape.
- Washable, and honest about how. It sits on your face for eight hours a night. Look for something you can hand wash without the foam disintegrating, and expect to replace it periodically like a pillowcase.
- Weight, if you like it. Lightly weighted masks are a preference rather than a feature — some people find gentle pressure calming, others find it claustrophobic. If you have any eye condition, ask a clinician before sleeping with pressure on your eyes.
What to skip
- Flat single-layer masks with a thin elastic cord. They press on the eyes and the cord digs in.
- Heated or vibrating masks marketed as sleep aids. They add a battery, a charging cable and something that turns off during the night.
- Masks with built-in headphones for anything other than travel. They are bulky to lie on and the cable or charge becomes a nightly chore.
- Anything scented or filled with lavender that cannot be washed. It stops smelling pleasant quickly and cannot be cleaned.
- Buying a mask instead of fixing the room, if the room is fixable. Blackout curtains or a blind solve the problem for everyone in the bed, permanently.
Price bands, without the prices
What you get as you spend more, described by what changes rather than by a number. For most of these the budget band is genuinely enough; where it is not, the page says so above.
| Band | What the extra money buys you |
|---|---|
| Budget | A simple contoured mask in cotton or synthetic with an adjustable flat strap. Perfectly effective, easy to replace, and the right thing to try first before spending more. |
| Mid | Better moulding, a proper adjustable nose seal, silk or bamboo lining, and a strap that stays put through the night. The improvement is in comfort and light leakage rather than in anything measurable. |
| Premium | Custom-contoured cups, memory foam edges, replaceable liners and travel cases. Sensible if you travel constantly or sleep during daylight for shift work; unnecessary in a dark bedroom. |
How it connects to tracking
If you are logging sleep, a mask is one of the few interventions with a fast and visible effect, which makes it worth a deliberate two-week trial rather than a vague impression. Note the date you started, keep everything else roughly constant, and compare the fortnight before with the fortnight after — looking at wake time and how often you woke rather than at a single overall score.
Be honest about what sleep tracking can and cannot see. Consumer devices estimate stages from movement and heart rate and are much better at total time and timing than at stage breakdowns. What a mask plausibly changes is early-morning waking and the number of wake-ups, so those are the numbers to watch.
General comfort guidance, not medical advice. Persistent poor sleep, loud snoring or breathing pauses deserve a clinician rather than a gadget.
Frequently asked questions
Is a mask better than blackout curtains?
Curtains are better if the room is yours and the problem is permanent. A mask wins on portability, on shared bedrooms, and on cost.
Will it help me fall asleep faster?
It may, if light is what is keeping you awake. It will not help with a racing mind, caffeine late in the day, pain or an irregular schedule, and no piece of equipment will.
Is it safe to wear every night?
For most people it is unremarkable, like wearing socks. If you have an eye condition, recent eye surgery, or you get pressure on the eyes from a weighted mask, ask a clinician first.
