What is actually known
The best available measurements of total energy expenditure across the lifespan describe a long plateau through adulthood, with a clear decline arriving considerably later than 40 — closer to 60 — once body composition is accounted for. The dramatic mid-life metabolic cliff is not visible in the data.
Standard predictive equations carry an explicit age penalty, and it is easy to inspect: in the Mifflin-St Jeor equation the age term is a flat 5 kcal per year of age. Two decades of ageing therefore predicts about 100 kcal a day, computed on this page. That is a slice of bread, not a metabolic collapse.
What does change substantially is body composition and behaviour. Muscle mass declines from roughly the third decade onward without resistance training, and muscle is more metabolically active than fat. Daily movement also falls: desk jobs, car commutes, children, injuries. Those two together explain most of the middle-age weight gain the myth attributes to age itself.
Hormonal change is real and worth naming. The menopausal transition is associated with a shift in fat distribution towards the abdomen and with changes in energy balance that are not simply a matter of willpower.
Why the myth persists
Because weight really does creep up in middle age, so the observation is correct even though the explanation is not. Age is also the one variable nobody can be blamed for, which makes it a comfortable place to put the cause.
The arithmetic

The age term in the standard equation is a flat 5 kcal per year. Hold body size fixed at 75 kg and 175 cm and read the penalty straight off:

Two decades of ageing predicts 100 kcal a day — about 1.3 slices of white bread. If that alone caused middle-age weight gain it would be worth 4.7 kg a year, which is not what anyone means when they say their metabolism died at 40.
And it is recoverable by moving slightly more: at 4.3 MET, brisk walking costs 5.6 kcal a minute at this body weight, so 18 minutes a day — roughly 1 949 steps — cancels the entire twenty-year age penalty.
What the equation does not model is the muscle you stop carrying and the steps you stop taking. Those are much larger than 100 kcal a day for most people, and unlike your age, both are things you can change.

The honest nuance
The practical consequence is encouraging rather than fatalistic. If the driver is lost muscle and lost movement, both respond to training and to steps in a way that ageing does not.
Sleep quality declines with age too, and short sleep is reliably associated with higher next-day intake. It is an underrated part of the middle-age picture.
