The hook
“Ten thousand steps is a marketing target. It came from a pedometer name.”
First four seconds. It states the surprise outright rather than promising one, because a promise is a reason to scroll and a surprise is a reason to stay.
Why this topic is worth 75 seconds
Ten thousand steps is a 1960s pedometer marketing target, not a medical recommendation. Saying that out loud is more useful than the number itself.
The research shows the biggest gains between very-low and moderate step counts, with diminishing returns after that. Naming the shape of the curve is what changes behaviour.
For most people the point is to move from 3 000 to 6 000, not from 9 000 to 10 000. That reframe is worth the whole video.
The figure is treated as clinical guidance and was never derived from research. Knowing its origin is not trivia — it releases the large group of people who read 6,000 steps as a failure.
The energy arithmetic is the second half: steps are worth a specific and unglamorous number of calories, and seeing it stops people expecting a walk to cancel a meal.

Production notes
- Do not put a specific study or author on screen. The claim is stated as a direction of evidence, not a citation.
- The curve must flatten rather than end. A truncated axis would misrepresent it.
- Shoot the walking footage at an actual brisk pace — the figures on screen are for brisk walking, not a stroll.
